ZSV 108, locally known as 'Choolwe', is a sorghum variety developed by farmers working hand in hand with researchers from the Zambia Agriculture Research Institute (ZARI) through Participatory Plant Breeding (PPB) using the Participatory Variety Development (PVD) approach. From selection to testing, farmers were closely involved, ensuring the variety responds to real field conditions and local needs.
In November this year, this joint effort reached an important milestone when the Seed Control and Certification Institute (SCCI) Variety Release Committee (VRC) approved Choolwe for commercial production. The release marks a clear recognition of the value of farmer-led breeding and locally driven innovation. ZSV 108 has also shown strong performance beyond Zambia. During regional trials in Northeastern Uganda, an area severely affected by drought, the variety proved relatively tolerant to dry conditions. While many crops failed, ZSV 108 remained the last crop standing, highlighting its potential to support farmers facing increasing climate stress.
